Photos of P-38J "Porky II" and unnamed P-38L Dec 23,  2003

These images were taken with a Sony digital camera.

dsc04832_t.jpg (15065 bytes) 1.  Close up of the upper portion of the right main landing gear, looking aft.
dsc04833_t.jpg (14441 bytes) 2.  The inside detail of a main gear door.
dsc04834_t.jpg (14690 bytes) 3.  The Allison engine placard. Near the bottom it lists the cylinder firing order as "1L 6R 5L 2R 3L 4R 6L 1R 2L 5R 4L 3R" and then

ALLISON DIVISION
GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA

dsc04835_t.jpg (13517 bytes) 4.  Left side of cockpit, with window down.
dsc04837_t.jpg (13937 bytes) 5.  A little closer (I held the camera up and took several shots until I got this one)
dsc04838_t.jpg (11418 bytes) 6.  Unnamed P-38L-5, sitting out in the open with tarp over canopy.
dsc04839_t.jpg (12337 bytes) 7.  It looks like it is ready to go any minute!
dsc04841_t.jpg (12317 bytes) 8.  Close-up of turbosupercharger using same photo technique as in #5.
dsc04842_t.jpg (10629 bytes) 9.  The radiator vent is closed.
dsc04843_t.jpg (11123 bytes) 10. Left tail.
dsc04844_t.jpg (11416 bytes) 11. Aft portion of left boom and both tails.
dsc04845_t.jpg (10384 bytes) 12. View taken above the elevator, just to the left of the upper counter balance.
dsc04846_t.jpg (10594 bytes) 13. Under the empennage looking at the inside lower portion of the left tail.
dsc04847_t.jpg (11228 bytes) 14. Similar, but the right tail.  The hand-written letters just to the left of the lower rudder hinge identifies the airplane as "Lockheed P-38L Ser. # 42-28235."

I believe that instead of "Ser. #" (Serial Number -- usually the USAAF Serial Number -- which has a two-digit prefix) the writer meant to write the Lockheed Constructor's Number "422-8235."

Author A. Kevin Grantham confirms my suspicions, as he identifies this plane in his book, The P-Screamers -- The History of Surviving Lockheed P-38 Lightnings, (1994)He writes:

N79123 -- P-38L-5-LO. C/N 422-8235 AAF S/N 44-27231. Converted to a F-5G-6-LO.   Post World War II air racer (race #95).  ... The aircraft is presently undergoing restoration ... in Chino, CA.

And as seen in photos 10, 11, and 19 on this page, this plane's registration is indeed N79123 and as we see on the next page, photo 21, the ASAAF S/N is indeed 44-27231.

*Beginning with the H, all subsequent P-38s were model 422.

dsc04848_t.jpg (12883 bytes) 15. View from just below the elevator external counterbalances (the low one is the dark blob at the top of the photo.)
dsc04849_t.jpg (10962 bytes) 16. The upper counterbalance.
dsc04850_t.jpg (10308 bytes) 17. Mid section of right boom and its turbosupercharger.
dsc04851_t.jpg (9313 bytes) 18.  Wider view than 17.
dsc04852_t.jpg (9207 bytes) 19. Right tail.  Lettering says "N79123."
dsc04853_t.jpg (8686 bytes) 20. Right radiator housing, etc.
